Commonwealth Fusion Systems is at the forefront of efforts to commercialize fusion energy, widely seen as a potential source of abundant, carbon-free power, as governments and industry seek solutions that support both climate goals and energy security. Under Mumgaard's leadership, the company has accelerated advances in high-temperature superconducting magnets and reactor design. It also plans to deploy the first commercial fusion power plants.Â
Reuters Energy & Environment Correspondent Tim Gardner sits down with Mumgaard at Responsible Business USA in Boston just a month after Mumgaard was appointed by US President Donald Trump as one of the first members of the President's Council of Advisors on Science & Technology. They will discuss the pathway to take fusion from experimental science to viable energy source, the role of regulation and private and government support, and how the United States is competing to lead in one of the most consequential technologies of the coming decades.Â
